Coles has significant experience with medical device and pharmaceutical mass tort resolution, beginning in 2000 with the Dalkon Shield Claimants Trust. Coles has been involved in all aspects of settlement agreement interpretation and implementation, including design, development and documentation of settlement websites and internal and external portals to support claimants, their attorneys, and other settlement program participants, data analysis, development of notices and forms, and preparation of program status reports in various settlement programs. Coles’s experience includes representing Pfizer in its class action settlement of nationwide product liability litigation and assisting in the implementation of the terms of the Settlement Agreement. She also worked extensively on the Eleventh Amendment to the Settlement Agreement, which modernized and enhanced the efficiency of the settlement’s administration. Coles currently is most involved with the processing and adjudication of claim submissions more quickly, more accurately and much less expensively than the previous Trust system, which was terminated upon approval of the Eleventh Amendment and replaced with BrownGreer as the Claim Administrator.
Coles’s former practice primarily involved advising and defending manufacturers and distributors against claims arising out of alleged product defects. She also handled contract, trademark, and professional conduct matters for an international association of financial analysts.
Upon graduating from law school, Coles served as Judicial Clerk to the Honorable Richard S. Bray. Coles researched, analyzed, and evaluated arguments on appeal. Additionally, she prepared summaries of appeals; drafted opinions supported by case research, and reviewed all opinions issued by the Court. While in law school, Coles participated in the investigation and prosecution of honor violations as a member of the Grievance Committee of the Honor Court. She also held the position of Associate Editor on the Executive Board of the University of Richmond Law Review.
